Why FM Grade Matters When Buying Construction Sand
FM Grade (Fineness Modulus) is the single most important technical specification for construction sand. Here is what it means and why you should always ask for it.
When buying construction sand, most people ask about price and availability. Very few ask about FM Grade — but this single number determines whether your sand is suitable for structural use or not.
What is FM Grade?
Fineness Modulus (FM) is a single number representing the average size of particles in a sand sample. It is calculated by running the sand through a series of sieves and measuring how much is retained on each.
FM Grade Ranges and Their Uses
| FM Range | Classification | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 – 2.0 | Fine Sand | Plastering, tile adhesive, skim coat |
| 2.0 – 2.5 | Medium Sand | Mortar, brick masonry, general concrete |
| 2.5 – 3.0 | Coarse Sand | RCC beams, columns, slabs, foundation |
What Happens If You Use the Wrong FM?
- Too fine (low FM) in structural concrete → weak mix, poor strength
- Too coarse (high FM) in plastering → rough surface, poor bonding
